UN to investigate alleged HHRR violations in Nicaragua

The United Nations Human Rights Council approved a resolution authorizing the creation of a group of experts that will look into alleged abuses committed by the government of president Daniel Ortega.

The resolution was approved with 20 votes in favor and 7 against (by Venezuela, Russia, Honduras, Eritrea, Cuba, China and Bolivia), and about twenty abstentions.

The Geneva-based UN body will appoint three experts to carry out thorough investigations of reported violations committed in Nicaragua since April 2018, when a revolt against the Ortega administration began.

The group will be given a term for analyzing the denunciations. This resolution by the Council is similar to one approved back in 2019 on the rights situation in Venezuela.
