Colombia's Petro admits country's responsibility in assassination

Colombian President Gustavo Petro admitted his country's responsibility in the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moise.

In July 2021, the Caribbean leader was shot by an armed group in his home in capital Port-au-Prince.

According to the investigation, mercenaries and former members of the Colombian security forces were involved in the attack.

For this reason, Mr Petro stated: "I want to go to Haiti, it is an issue where Colombia is partly responsible".

He said this in the framework of the Ibero-American Summit held in recent days in the Dominican Republic.

The Colombian Head of State did not reveal when he would travel to the Caribbean nation which, according to him, "needs democratic aid, not aid based on weapons".

Seventeen Colombian nationals are being held in Port Au Prince in connection with Moise's murder.

Shooting suspects also include Haitians, Americans and Venezuelans, according to the investigation.
