In Colombia, the main drug cartel rejected the peace proposal of the government headed by President Gustavo Petro.

The Gulf Clan reported that it does not accept the conditions of submission to justice offered by Bogotá.

The criminal group's lawyer, Ricardo Giraldo, announced that his clients want to hand over their weapons through negotiations, and not by surrendering to the authorities.

The narco group is seeking the same treatment as left-wing guerrillas, such as the ELN, who are in dialogue with the government.

Mr Petro had initiated contacts with the Clan as part of his "total peace" strategy to end armed violence in Colombia.

He had proposed to the cartel a reduction in sentences and the possibility for the leaders to keep part of their fortunes in exchange for surrender.
