Court order RAE ARGENTINA TO THE WORLD

BA to protect architectural heritage

A court ordered the government of the city of Buenos Aires to take measures to protect its architectural heritage.

Judges ruled that the authorities of the Argentine capital will have to list all constructions built before 1941, estimated at more than 130,000.

The ruling also orders that no further demolition, alteration or extension of listed buildings be authorized.

The court granted the request of several conservationist organizations, which have been warning about the loss of the building heritage of Buenos Aires.

In the last two decades, under pressure from the real estate market, many of the city's typical buildings have been replaced by high-rise residential towers.

Many of the lost constructions were the so-called "casas chorizos", from the beginning of the 20th century, which are part of the identity of Buenos Aires neighbourhoods.
