Historic tapes RAE ARGENTINA TO THE WORLD

Argentine Antarctic Radio sound library

The Executive Director of Radio Nacional, Alejandro Pont Lezica, handed over to the Coordinator of RTA's Historical Archive, Julio Baraibar, 45 tapes on open reel containing recordings of programmes broadcast from 1979 onwards.

The tapes were in the Museum of Antarctic Base Esperanza and were recovered thanks to Brigadier General Edgar Calandin,Commander of the Joint Antarctic Command and the head of Esperanza Base, Lieutenant Colonel Gustavo Cordero Spandolo.

Work on the audio material was made by Engineer Alejandro Alvarez, Juan Benavente from LRA36, Alejandro Petrecca and RAE's head Adrián Korol.

These recordings are the sound heritage of more than 40 years of LRA36 broadcasts, and further boost the universal recognition of our sovereign rights in Antarctica, supported day by day by fellow Argentines manning our bases. This action also enhances the value of the Antarctic radio station, which is one of the central guidelines of the current administration of Argentina's Public National Radio.

The professional team of the RTA's Historical Archive is already working on the preservation and restoration of the material, in order to continue with the proper tagging of the content, before it is fully digitized, with its audio processed for improvements in sound quality.

This initiative has led to a call to public and private organisations, as well as individuals, who have 16 or 35 millimetre film records in their possession. They were invited to submit them to the RTA Historical Archive the content so it is fully digitised using professional means and advanced technology.

All the material will make up the ANTARCTIC AUDIOVISUAL HISTORICAL ARCHIVE which will soon be fully available online.
