50 years after the Coup RAE ARGENTINA TO THE WORLD

Victor Jara's killers sentenced

In Chile, seven former members of the military have been convicted for the death of poet Victor Jara, almost 50 years after his murder.

Those sentenced must serve between eight and 25 years in prison for the crimes of kidnapping and murder.

Jara died a few days after the coup d'état of 11 September 1973 in which the then president Salvador Allende was overthrown, and replaced by dictator Augusto Pinochet.

He had been confined in the National Stadium, which the military had transformed into a concentration camp.

One of the accused, Pedro Barrientos, lives in the USA, where a court convicted him seven years ago for this crime.

The defense of the singer-songwriter's relatives praised the Supreme Court's ruling, which they described as "in line with the gravity of the facts".

The source recalled that Jara was tortured "to satiety" and then shot "with several dozen bullets".
