RAE ARGENTINA TO THE WORLD

National Antarctic Radio celebrates 44 years on the air

This Friday 20th, LRA 36 Radio Arcángel San Gabriel, one of the southernmost radio stations in the world, turns 44 years old.

As part of the federal network of Radio Nacional Argentina, it broadcasts from the Esperanza Base.

In recent years, it has also become a milestone because its operation is fully in the hands of women, members of the Argentine Army, who are specially trained for this role.

On this new anniversary we salute hosts Lorena Alvarado Maria Victoria Menendez Noemi Cisneros and operator Nicole Valdebenito.

The first broadcasts of "la San Gabriel" as it is known were supported by LRA10 Radio Nacional Ushuaia and LRA24 Radio Nacional Río Grande.

The first song played on the airwaves was La Primavera, a milonga by Víctor Velásquez.

The first program aired was called "Horizontes de Hielo" (Horizons of Ice) and reported on the activities of the Esperanza Base and the Sargento Cabral Fort.

Currently, San Gabriel broadcasts daily to the Argentine bases in Antarctica, and by shortwave to the rest of the world.

The Chief of the Joint Antarctic Base Esperanza is Lieutenant Colonel Gustavo Cordero Scandolo. Coordination is by Juan Benavente.
