Lawmakers want to revoke abortion rights

On the same day of the setback for the Omnibus Law, pro-government representatives submitted a bill to revoke the right to abortion in Argentina.

The initiative is signed by six lawmakers of President Milei’s party, "La Libertad Avanza".

In a document, they expressed that the interruption of pregnancy is "contrary to the general feeling of the Argentine people".

In the proposal they even toughen the penalties for abortion, which would be punishable also in case of rape, unless ordered by a judge.

"There is no reason, no matter how dramatic it may be, that justifies discarding an innocent life", say the libertarian congresspeople behind the bill.

It is worth remembering that Mr Milei has stated several times that he is a staunch opponent of abortion, which was legalized in Argentina in 2020.

The proposal to repeal it was rejected by a large part of the opposition and even by the ruling party, which considers it inopportune given the economic context.
