Brazil loses 1,600 square kilometers of the Amazon due to deforestation

That's the highest monthly rate of the last 10 years, according to the Institute of Man and Environment of the Amazon (Imazon) , a non-profit organization that promotes sustainable development in Brazil.

Deforestation detected in August 2021 occurred in the northern states of Pará (40 percent), Amazonas (26 percent), Acre (15 percent), Rondônia (10 percent) and Mato Grosso (9 percent).

Deforestation has been denounced by environmental organizations because the government of president Jair Bolsonaro, environmentalists say, does nothing to prevent this plunder, and allows the jungle to be razed to make space for farming, cattle and mining.
