After UNASUR's fade out RAE ARGENTINA TO THE WORLD

Brazil's Lula hosts South American summit

Brazil's President Lula da Silva will host a Summit of his South American peers tomorrow in the capital Brasilia.

The meeting is seen as an attempt to revive the regional integration process, frozen under his predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro.

The summit will be attended by almost all South American Heads of State, including Venezuela's Nicolás Maduro.

The only one not attending is Dina Boluarte of Peru, who was not authorised by Congress to leave the country due to the serious political and institutional crisis.

The leaders will meet at the headquarters of the Brazilian foreign ministry, the Itamaraty Palace.

According to official sources, all discussions will take place behind closed doors, with no obligation to issue a final declaration of the meeting.

Brazilian officials anticipate that consensus will be sought on issues such as health, infrastructure, energy, the environment and the fight against organised crime.

The South American nations were already grouped together in the UNASUR bloc, founded more than a decade ago by Lula himself and the late Hugo Chávez.

But the group lost momentum due to ideological differences when conservative governments took office in several countries in the region.
