Brazil's Lula launches plan to protect the Amazon

In Brazil, President Lula da Silva is launching a plan to protect the Amazon from deforestation.

The programme establishes a coordinated strategy between different areas of his government that will last until the end of his term in 2027.

When showcasing the initiative, Lula said: "I am committed to retake Brazil's world leadership in climate change mitigation and deforestation control”.

The plan envisages greater use of satellite imagery to detect illegal activities.

It also aims to regularize land titles in the Amazon.

In addition, it seeks to restore degraded native forests and replenish native vegetation through economic incentives for sustainable forestry initiatives.
