Early elections in Ecuador could be held on 20 August.

This was revealed by the National Electoral Council, which will announce the exact date next week.

If ratified, a new government could take office in the South American country by the end of the year.

This follows the dissolution of Congress by President Guillermo Lasso, who announced that the elections originally scheduled for 2025 would be brought forward.

He adopted the measure a day after appearing before parliament in a corruption impeachment trial against him.

The Head of State considered the allegations of embezzlement to be false.

He deemed the impeachment to be an opposition move to remove him from office.
