Brazil RAE ARGENTINA TO THE WORLD

Last member of tribe dies

The sole survivor of a massacre of natives more than 25 years ago died in Rondonia, the Amazon.

The exact date of his death is not known, as he was living in solitude. He was found by Altair Algayer, a State-funded carer who watched over him for 26 years.

Reportedly, he was found in his hammock, covered with macaw feathers and with no signs of violence. It is believed that he died of natural causes and with his death his tribe, of which little is known, is definitively extinct.

He was called the "Indian of the Hole", as his hut had a deep sinkhole. After his tribe was torn to pieces, he never had contact with or spoke a word to people who did not belong to his tribe. That is why he is described as "the loneliest man" in Brazil.

He was believed to be in his 60s and for a quarter of a century refused to have any contact with the rest of society. He lived in a territory of 80 square kilometres surrounded by cattle ranches. After his body was found, it was taken to Brasilia for forensic analysis.
