Elections Argentina 2023 RAE ARGENTINA TO THE WORLD

Over a million first-time teen voters

More than one million 16 and 17 year olds will vote for the first time in Argentina next Sunday.

This is according to the electoral roll that will be used in the primaries of 13 August, as reported by official news agency Télam.

These first-time voters represent 3.3% of the total number of voters for these elections.

In Argentina, voting is mandatory for those between the ages of 18 and 70, and optional for those above that age.

In 2012, the electoral code was modified and the right to vote was extended to include those between 16 and 18 years of age.

For these young people, voting is also optional.

Sunday is the PASO in Argentina, an acronym that stands for Simultaneous and Mandatory Open Primary Elections (Primarias Abiertas Simultáneas y Obligatorias).

At this point, citizens choose which candidates will compete in the general elections on 22 October.

On that day, votes will be cast for president and vice-president, national legislators, and local authorities, among other positions.

In the case of the presidential vote, if necessary, there will be a run-off election on 19 November.

The successor to outgoing president Alberto Fernández will take office on 10 December.
