Bergoglio selbst sagte bei der Übernahme des Pontifikats am 13. März 2013: "Ich komme vom Ende der Welt".
Seine Mitbrüder entschieden sich für einen nüchternen, weltlichen, aufrichtigen Mann, der in die aktuellen moralischen Debatten verwickelt war, und zwar zu einer Zeit, in der die mächtige kirchliche Struktur mit Skandalen wegen Pädophilie, Geldwäsche u.a. konfrontiert war.
