State of the Union Address RAE ARGENTINA TO THE WORLD

President calls for judicial reform

President Alberto Fernández inaugurated the sessions period of Congress.

This is a tradition comparable to the "State of the Union" speech in the USA.

When opening the 141st legislative cycle, one of the main issues he mentioned was what he believes is the need to reform the Judicial Power.

For Mr Fernandez and a large part of the ruling party, many judges act with partiality and not in accordance with the law.

In particular, the Head of State stated that the Judiciary does not investigate thoroughly the assassination attempt against Vice-President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, which took place last September.

He also criticized the Supreme Court, which ordered the Casa Rosada to return funds to the City of Buenos Aires, which is governed by the opposition.

For this reason, the Head of State defended his request for impeachment of the four Supreme Court Justices, who were present in the Congress listening to his speech.

Mr Fernandez expressed before the Legislative Assembly: "there is no attack or onslaught" on courts, but rather the search to "put an end to the basements of democracy".

His words were booed by opposition legislators, many of whom left the chamber in protest.
